No sooner was the Davis Cup championship over and celebration burst out on the courts and in the locker room. The coaches, the players of the two teams, their managers and their friends all descended on our Abades Triana restaurant.
There, holding the cup, they celebrated their victory with all of us at our restaurant. The first to arrive were the Argentinians, who were very sociable and good company. Next was the Spanish team. They signed our guestbook and were greeted with huge applause as they entered the room.
Before dinner, there were a few speeches. The Mayor, Juan Ignacio Zoido, who is known to have said that “it’s a known fact that Seville was the better team” congratulated the Argentine team and said “you are at home, here.”
Jose Luis Escañuela, President of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation, told the Argentinians, “you didn’t lose, you won our hearts. Seville is with you and, for sure, you’ll win the cup soon.”
Ramiro Mata, President of BNP Paribas Spain, a sponsor of the tournament, and Francisco Ricci, President of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) that had excelled with its perfect organisation, also said a few words.
We, the Abades Triana team, are very proud to have made our little contribution as sponsors, and we thank the City of Seville for giving us the opportunity to be a part of the Davis Cup event.
